Quick Guide to Asphalt Thickness for Various Uses
Typical commercial construction projects in the Upstate of South Carolina have a "standard" Light Duty Asphalt detail including 6" of compacted crusher run and 2" of surface asphalt.
Residential driveways can range in thickness of surface asphalt used, but the key to a long-lasting product for residential driveways is 1) Solid Subgrade and 2) Proper Drainage away from the asphalt surface.
Heavier traffic areas, such as access routes to dumpster pads, etc. typically call for Heavy Duty Asphalt, which varies in thickness, but typically ranges from 6" to 8" thick compacted crusher run with 2" of binder asphalt and 2" of surface asphalt.
SCDOT primary and secondary roads can have 12" or more of asphalt thickness.
The three main types of asphalt are surface (typical top layer of asphalt), binder (typically used below surface or as temporary surface during construction - has larger rock or aggregate in the mix), and black base (even more large aggregate - used as the base layer of asphalt, sometimes instead of crusher run base).
